Do It Yourself: Milk Bag Holder
Sat Nov 21 13:28:05 2009
I was stuck in the middle of the move... most of my stuff was already at the new location, but I had to stay at my old one for some time. Whilst I moved my bagged milk along with milk bag holder to the new place, I still had milk left at the old one.
Being rather broke, I've decided to "hack one up" on the spot, instead of spending $4 on a new milk holder that I did not need.
First of all, let's see what we are replicating here as well as what the milk bags are:
I suppose the proper term is "milk bag pitcher", but I prefer to call it holder, as it holds the bag and not pitches any milk...
Of course, what we'll make today is just a temporary thing, thus the goal is practical and not actually pretty.
Materials You Need
I had limited supplies at this location, so I had to use the most commonly found materials. We'll need:
- Plastic bottle, 1L in size, or larger.
- Any kind of tape, I've used electric tape.
- Knife or scissors.
I had this 1.5L juice bottle that turned out quite perfect for the task, however, I'm sure that any plastic bottle will do the trick.
Crack it Open
The first step is a no-brainer, we need to cut the top of the bottle off, so that we could put the milk bag into the other half. Here, in the first picture, the tape shows the approximate position at which you'd want to cut the bottle:
This is what my cut part of the bottle looked like when I stuffed my milk bag into it:
To some, our "milk pitcher" might look complete, but I want it all! And I'm talking about the handle that makes pouring as well as putting the thing back into the fridge easy as pie.
What I did, is I cut about half an inch thick ring off the left-over part of the bottle, and then taped that ring to the other part of the bottle. Make sure that you use a ring and not just a strip, or there's a good chance that the strip will eventually slide out and you'll drop your PRECIOUS milk:

Cuts and Bruises - The Final Warning
The edges of the handle can easily cut your skin, especially if you've cut the bottle with scissors and not a knife. To ensure your joyful use of our temporary milk-holder, use a lighter or a stove on the edges of our handle to melt the plastic a bit and make it smooth...
Enjoy!
