Recipe - Snowstorm in Hawaii

Sun Nov 22 11:01:05 2009

Vitaminy, meatless desert that can fill you up.

If fruits are all peeled and cut, it takes about 3 minutes to make this. The photos show a portion for one [really hungry] person.

The dish contains ice-cream, which melts quite fast. Along with fresh fruits, I really don't suggest you stick in in the freezer but if the ice-cream is completely melted - the dish loses a lot of its taste. Make sure you make this right before serving.

Ingredients

I won't list quantities as you'll need only a part of a whole fruit for some items or a couple for others. Read the instructions and judge the quantity yourself.

Ingredients

  • Pineapple
  • Green seedless grapes
  • Bananas
  • Peaches
  • Kiwi
  • Seedless watermelon
  • Mango
  • "Tropical" flavored stirred yogurt.
  • Low fat sour cream (but see notes at the end)
  • Some kind of ice-cream. I've used "Oreo" one with pieces of Oreo cookies in it and it worked great.
  • Optionally - shredded coconut.

How does this work

Before we proceed, I'd like you to understand how this dish works taste-wise. I think it's a good idea to tell the person eating it how to eat it. You'll need a deep dish, but not too wide. The one in the photos is almost perfect, but I could not finish the entire thing despite the fact that I was quite hungry :)

A person should start eating from the top, completing the entire "layer" before moving on further down. The reason for that is because the fruits are arranged in a special way: eat a piece of watermelon, was it tasty? Now eat a piece of banana and eat the same watermelon again, seems not as sweet. That's the idea in this dish. Anyway.. onto the makin'.

Preparation

Bananas + yogurt

Ice-cream layer

Top fruit layer

Sour-cream layer

  • Peel and slice the banana and lay the pieces in one layer covering the entire bottom of the dish.
  • Put flavored yogurt over it - just covering the bananas.
  • Lay cut mango pieces in one layer covering the yogurt. I had a really bad mango, quite not ripe at all, so I cut it in thin, long pieces.
  • Now, see the photo. You'll need grapes, watermelon pieces and a scoop of ice-cream. NOTE: ice-cream melts quite fast. I suggest you postpone taking it out of the freezer until this entire level is done. The ice-cream scoop goes into the center while watermelon pieces and grapes alternate around the ice-cream.
  • Dump peach and pineapple pieces on top to cover previous layers.
  • Now the tricky part, I used a "real" sour cream with lots of fat in it and that didn't quite taste right. I suggest you use a very low fat sour cream or plain yogurt. Cover the entire top of the dish with sour cream/yogurt so it would look all white.
  • Put kiwi half-slices on top to look pretty, put one grape in the center and sprinkle with shredded coconut if you'd like. All done!
